The three mysteries of the Rosary which are traditionally known are the Joyful Mysteries, the Sorrowful Mysteries, and the Glorious Mysteries. Pope John Paul II in his apostolic letter, "Rosarium Virginis Mariae" (The Rosary of the Virgin Mary), proposed a new set of mysteries, which he called the Luminous Mysteries, which focus on the period of the public life of o ur Lord. The Pope recommended Thursdays as a day to pray the Mysteries of Light, and so making Mondays and Saturdays the days for praying the Joyful Mysteries. Sundays would remain a day for praying the Glorious Mysteries. 1. Make the Sign of the Cross 2. Apostles' Creed (on the cross) 3. The Lord's Prayer - "Our Father" (on the first bead) 4. Hail Mary, three times (on the next three beads) (One may ask here for an increase of the virtues of faith, hope and charity) 5. Glory Be to the Father, one time 6. Announce the first mystery, and pray the "Our Father" one time, the Hail Mary ten times, and the Glory Be to the Father one time, meditating on the Mystery. At the end of each decade it is customary to pray the following prayer which the Blessed Virgin Mary requested at Fatima: "O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy." 8. After completing the first decade, continue likewise for the second, third and so on. Concluding prayers After completing the Rosary, pray the "Hail, Holy Queen" on the medal. Next: "Let us pray: O God, Whose only begotten Son ..." Order of days for praying the Rosary The Joyful Mysteries on Monday and Thursday The Sorrowful Mysteries on Tuesday and Friday The Glorious Mysteries on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday The Mysteries 5.
